How Clean is Clean
Final Report of NCMS Project No. 171003 (June 1998)
The mandated elimination of all chlorofluorocarbon (CFC)
cleaning agents prompted the participants of the Definition and
Measurement of Cleanliness project to explore the relationship
between assembly residues and electrical performance.
Participants quantified the residues from assembly processes
that included low-residue flux/no cleaning and water-soluble
flux/aqueous cleaning. The effects of the residues on electrical
performance were assessed. New analytical procedures were
investigated and developed. The interaction between flux
chemistry and the soldering process and process variables were
evaluated. These evaluations were shared with the electronics
community through technical publications and conference
presentations. This 504-page project final report presents these
results as a compilation of technical documents.
