Adaptive Process Control for Mechanical Pressurization
Final Report of NCMS Project No. 140307 (August 1997) The
project goals were to: design/fabricate a new method for curing
composites; develop adaptive process controls or artificial
intelligence (AI) to direct the cure of the material via
embedded sensors; and prove the concept in a production
environment. Some accomplishments of the project, conducted in
six phases, include: an operable Mechanoclave(TM) mechanical
pressurization system; successful integration of embedded
sensors into the curing of a polyimide resin system; and
demonstration of AI software that reacted to sensor feedback.
This report details the activities of each project phase from
the viewpoint of the program lead. Lessons learned and future
work that needs to be accomplished are also covered. All figures
are in color.
