Development of Replacements for Phoscoating Used in Forging,
Extrusion and Metal Forming Processes Final Report
Many forging, extrusion, heading and other metal forming
processes use graphite-based lubricants, phosphate coatings, and
other potentially hazardous or harmful substrances to improve
the tribology of the metal forming process. A focus on
environmentally conscious manufacturing is consistent with the
objectives of metal forming companies, metal forming equipment
manufactures and the material and coating suppliers. A holistic
approach to replacement of phoscoatings was developed by the
NCMS team and a description of the tests and results are
presented in this report.
